This is the average cost and mileage of a used car in South Africa – by body type

New data from AutoTrader shows the most popular online used vehicle searches in South Africa when it comes to body type.

The online car marketplace noted an all-time record high of over 319 million online vehicle searches conducted during the first half of 2021.

This is revealed in the group’s 2021 AutoTrader Mid-Year Industry Report, which provides precise data when it comes to the used car market in South Africa.

“We have seen a 48% increase in body-type searches year-on-year indicating that there is more of a consumer need to search by body type. Consumer buying behaviour in this area has also been influenced by more brands having released various shapes of the “same” model,” AutoTrader said.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class and Audi A3 for example, are both available as a hatchback or sedan, while Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux come in both single, extended and double-cabs.

As the fastest growing body type globally, it was no surprise that SUVs had the highest body-type searches on AutoTrader. Single and double-cab bakkies however still continued to generate high search volumes resulting in bakkies retaining the highest consumer consideration if you combine single and double-cabs.

Volkswagen leads the body-type specific searches appearing in 4 of the top 6 categories as well as dominating the top 3 for hatchbacks.
