Another new Chinese car brand launches in South Africa
Major Chinese vehicle brand, Changan, has officially launched in South Africa through a partnership with Saudi mobility group, Jameel Motors South Africa.
The group made its official re-entry to the South African market at the end of October, with the brand offering five models to start, including a first-of-its-kind bakkie.
The models are:
- Changang Alsvin (Compact sedan)
- Changan CS75 Pro (SUV)
- Changan Hunter Diesel (Bakkie)
- Changan Hunter REEV (EV Bakkie)
- Changan Deepal S07 (Luxury EV)
Changan is one of China’s four largest automotive groups, with a presence in 70 countries and sales of 2.7 million units in 2024.
The group previously offered passenger vehicles in South Africa under the Chang’an brand, which also carried commercial vehicles like vans, light trucks and buses.
Larger commercial vehicles were sold under the Chana brand. However, the brand exited the country in 2012.
Earlier this year,it was announced that Jameel Motors South Africa would be bringing the brand back, serving as its official distributor.
Jameel Motors primarily focuses on the distribution of Changan and Deepal products, offering vehicles that are ideal for South Africa’s diverse terrain and road conditions.
Speaking at the launch, Marinus Venter, Country General Manager, Jameel Motors South Africa, said that Changan is not entering South Africa as just another name in the market.
“We’re here to set a new standard where quality, technology, and reliability meet real value,” he said.
Xiao Feng, General Manager of Changan Automobile Middle East and Africa, said the partnership with Jameel would bring the “future of mobility” to customers in South Africa.

The automatic version replaces the manual transmission with a 5-Speed DCT Auto Transmission, and adds engine auto start/stop, cruise control, an electric sunroof, and a tyre pressure monitoring system.

The CE version adds various luxuries, such as heated mirrors, a microfiber leather interior, voice control and heated seats, while also upgrading the various systems and sensors. Both versions come in 7-seat variants.
