The most dangerous time of day to be on South Africa’s roads
New data shows that 03h00 is the most dangerous time to be on South Africa’s roads, with drivers facing almost double the risk of being involved in a collision compared to travelling during the day.
This is according to a new report published by Optix Intelligence, a fleet safety intelligence and driver behaviour management company in South Africa, which analysed 12 months of driving data between May 2025 and April 2026.
According to the report, the increased danger is caused by a combination of human biology and South Africa’s poor road conditions.
Optix analysed more than 8.9 million driver-hours and 16.1 million recorded driving events. Instead of measuring crashes against overall traffic volume, it calculated collisions per 1,000 active drivers to provide a clearer picture of individual risk.
The data showed that the safest time to be on the road is around 10h00 in the morning, when the collision rate falls to 0.66 collisions per 1,000 drivers.
From there, the risk gradually increases through the afternoon and evening before rising sharply after midnight. The collision rate peaks at 03h00, with 1.37 collisions per 1,000 drivers.
“The peak is 1.84 times the daytime baseline,” the report said. It added that the hours between 23h00 and 01h00 also recorded collision rates above 1.30 per 1,000 drivers, making them significantly more dangerous than daylight travel.
“The pattern is not unique to our fleet. Published South African research and RTMC fatality statistics show the same trend, with night-time accounting for the majority of road fatalities nationally.”
The company explained that one of the main reasons for this increased danger is the body’s natural internal clock.
“The human body operates on an internal 24-hour clock that regulates alertness, body temperature, hormone release, and cognitive performance.”
During the body’s circadian trough, which occurs between approximately 02h00 and 06h00, alertness, reaction time and decision-making all decline.
“During the nighttime dip, reaction times slow, attention narrows, and the ability to respond to unexpected events degrades sharply.”
While biology plays a major role, South Africa’s road environment further increases the danger of overnight travel.

Poor road conditions a major concern
According to Optix, many rural and regional roads have no street lighting, forcing drivers to rely solely on headlights that typically illuminate only 60 to 120 metres ahead. At highway speeds, this leaves very little time to react to unexpected hazards.
The report also pointed to poor road conditions, including potholes, faded lane markings, missing reflective road studs and damaged or stolen road signs, all of which become much harder to spot after dark.
Livestock and wildlife are another significant hazard, particularly along major routes such as the N1, N3, N7, N11 and N12, as well as many provincial roads.
Dark-coloured cattle, goats and donkeys wandering onto unlit roads can be almost impossible to see until it is too late.
Pedestrians also remain a major concern. In many rural communities, roads are shared by vehicles, people walking, livestock and informal traders, with many pedestrians crossing at unmarked locations or walking along road shoulders at night.
The report added that broken-down vehicles, trucks parked on road shoulders and unmarked obstructions are common on long stretches of road between towns, creating further risks for night-time motorists.
National road fatality statistics reinforce these findings. A 2025 study of Western Cape Emergency Medical Services data, covering January 2021 to May 2024, found that 51.5% of all road traffic fatalities occurred at night.
The study also found that identified hotspot areas carried more than double the mortality risk, while pedestrians accounted for 65.3% of all fatalities.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation’s 2024/25 festive season report found that pedestrians accounted for 41% of all road deaths during the holiday period, when overnight and long-distance travel is at its peak.
