New shopping mall opening in one of the richest areas in South Africa

 ·12 Nov 2025

Segonyana Mall is set to open in Kuraman in the Northern Cape, whose broader area is home to South Africa’s highest income earners.

The new mall will open on 27 November 2025 and will offer a family-friendly shopping experience in the heart of Kuruman.

The mall is being developed by the Moolman Group, who are experts in rural retail developments.  It officially broke ground in December 2024 following years of planning and multiple delays.

The 11,000 sqm mall is anchored by major food retailers Boxer and Shoprite, with several other retailers in fashion, food, banking, and daily essentials, including:

  • ASJ
  • Choice Clothing
  • Exact
  • Express Store
  • Markhams
  • Mr Price
  • Pep
  • Sportscene
  • Styles
  • Total Sports
  • Hungry Lion
  • Roots Grill
  • ABSA Bank

  • Nedbank ATM
  • Standard Bank

The mall is positioned near the town’s main taxi rank, and “is set to become part of a dynamic new retail node at the centre of town life.”

The mall also hopes tol boost local economic growth, and create much-needed jobs during its construction and operations.

Richest areas

Notably, Segonyana Mall is also in one of South Africa’s richest areas by taxable income.

Segonyana Mall is named after the Segonyana Local Municipality in which it is found. It also forms part of the John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality.

Another local municipality that forms part of the John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality is Gamagara, which is home to South Africa’s highest earners.

Gamagara is home to the popular mining town of Kathu, which is a mere 35 minutes from Kuruman.

Both towns are heavily influenced by the mining activity in the area, with Kathu near Kumba Iron Ore’s flagship mine, Sishen.

The latest data from the National Treasury and the South African Revenue Service (SARS) showed that  Gamagara had an average taxable income of R518,808.

This is far ahead of second place, which was the City of Johannesburg, which has an average taxable income of R484,671.

This is not the first time Gamagara’s dominance has been highlighted, as the municipality also saw the highest per capita spending in 2016 and 2022

Stats SA previously noted that the areas’ mining activities attract skilled workers and high-income workers.

The municipality is also relatively self-sufficient, with every R100 spent on residents seeing R90 coming from the city.

Although the Northern Cape is South Africa’s least populated province, it has several areas that make up the nation’s highest earners.

Another area close to the Segonyana local municipality is the Joe Morolong Local Municipality, which is also part of the John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality.

Joe Morolong’s average taxable income stood at R427,977, making it the fourth-highest earning area in the country.
