Top banking brand for business in South Africa
The Sunday Times has announced the winners of its Top Brands survey for 2017, revealing the favourite brands of local consumers and businesses.
The 2017 survey polled 3,500 individuals, aged 18 years and older in both metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas of South Africa to establish a ranking of top brands in 32 consumer categories.
Similarly, 468 business leaders and decision-makers were interviewed to establish the top brands across twelve business categories.
The rankings take brand familiarity and awareness, the perceptions of users and non-users, as well as the size of brand presence in the market into account.
Across all categories, KFC emerged as the favourite brand among South African consumers, followed by Samsung and Shoprite stores. For businesses, Vodacom was the most popular brand, ahead of the Apple iPhone and Discovery Health medical aid.

Looking specifically at tech and banking, business and consumers had very different tastes – except for voting Vodacom to be the best telco provider in the country.
But when it comes to cellphone brands, consumers preferred Samsung devices (while businesses liked the Apple iPhone), and with banking, consumers lifted Capitec to the top, while businesses chose FNB as their best corporate bank.
