FNB Connect intros free VoIP, app data access

 ·10 Sep 2012

FNB Connect announced in a press statement today (10 September 2012) that its voice-over-IP (VoIP) services and the FNB banking app are zero-rated on its network.

This means that their customers will no longer pay for the data component of their VoIP calls, nor for the data used by the FNB banking app, Farren Roper, head of FNB Connect ISP said.

“Our ADSL clients already have free access to FNB sites, but with the shift towards App banking, we wanted to extend the free access to our app clients as well,” Roper said. “Our ADSL clients who have a Wi-Fi enabled router can now access the Banking App without incurring a data charge and this includes VoIP calls on the app.”

Before today, FNB Connect already implemented zero-rated traffic to the following sites:

  • FNB Online
  • FNB Connect
  • Ebucks
  • Facebook, Twitter, YouTube (7–11pm)
  • Educational sites like SA Council of Higher Education Universities

FNB Connect offers free calls to other registered users as well as FNB contact centres through a PC phone or from the FNB banking app.

SA cellular calls are priced from 79 cents per minute and FNB said that customers can make calls to the top 20 international destinations, including India, US and the UK from 25 cents.
