Telkom has published a code of conduct document detailing how employees of its wholesale and retail businesses should and shouldn’t engage with each other.
This follows a ruling by the Competition Tribunal in July 2013, which ordered Telkom to implement a functional wholesale and retail separation within its business.
According to the new Code of Conduct, as seen by BusinessTech, the top policy is for Telkom Wholesale to treat Telkom Retail and other lincensed operators in a non-discriminatory manner, while protecting confidential information of other licensed operators from Telkom Retail.
According to the document, Telkom Wholesale employees are prohibited from giving special treatment to requests made by Telkom Retail employees (such as priority services), as well as prohibited from sharing any confidential information from competing operators (such as client information or product pricing models).
“Although this Code impacts Wholesale and Network employees in particular, all employees must read the Code of Conduct to understand their obligations,” Telkom CEO, Sipho Maseko told employees.
“We are also developing a separate competition compliance training programme for relevant employees on competition issues.”
According to the document, Telkom noted that non-compliance of the code by employees would result in possible disciplinary action taking place, as non-compliance would breach the company’s agreement with the Competition Tribunal.
The telco said it would protect whistle-blowers acting in good faith to report non-compliance.
