Top 10 best-selling bakkies in South Africa
The rivalry between Ford and Toyota in the pick up, or ‘bakkie’ category has been fierce in 2015, with the Hilux and Ranger among the top selling vehicles in the country.
Data from Lightstone Auto and Naamsa shows that three of the top five best selling vehicles in SA in 2015 are bakkies, with only the Volkswagen Polo Vivo able to keep pace.
The Hilux outsold the Ranger in February by a mere 19 units, but in March sold more than 500 units more than the Ford.
In June, however, the Ranger pipped Hilux by just over 100 vehicles, but in July, the Toyota brand surged ahead, offloading nearly 1,000 units more than its competitor.
Statistics from the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa, for September showed that the Hilux was the best selling bakkie in the country, and second most popular vehicle overall.
The Ranger is second best seller in September, and fourth overall, however, the two marks have regularly swapped places month-to-month in 2015.
1. Toyota Hilux- 3,431
Toyota launched the eighth-generation Toyota Hilux in 2015. The Hilux first hit dealerships in 1968, selling over 16 million in more than 180 countries.
The Japanese car maker said it would celebrate a million units sold in South Africa alone, in 2015.
Toyota has a modest 16 models of Hilux to choose from in SA, starting at R315,100 for a 2.7 VVT-i Raised Body SC Dakar, pushing out 118 kw, while its 4.0 V6 4×4 Auto DC Legend 45, starts at R563,900, with 175 kw of power.
2. Ford Ranger – 2,865
the second best seller last month was a Ford Ranger, with 2865
The Ranger has 34 different styling options in South Africa – starting at R189,900 for a Ranger 2.5 Base LR 5MT Chassis Cab Petrol, and going up to R558,900 for a Ranger 3.2 Wildtrak 4×4 6AT Double Cab Diesel.
Earlier this week, Ford unveiled its Ranger Wildtrak 2016 model in SA.
The base single cab pushes out 122 kw at 5,500 rpm, with torque of 226 Nm at 4,500 rpm, while the top of the range model pushes out 147 kw at 3,000 rpm.
3. Nissan NP200 – 1,606
This Nissan has consistently ranked in the top 5 best selling vehicles in SA in 2015, one would think based on its price – starting at R145,300.
The engine on this car, along with the reliability factor that comes with Nissan, makes this car a popular choice.
It’s 1598 cc engine pushes out 64 Kw, while fuel consumption is also miserly at 8.1 l/100 km
4. Chevrolet Utility – 1,382
The Chev starts at a very competitive R 143,900 for a 1.4 delivering 68 kW@6000 rpm.
5. Isuzu KB – 1,265
The Isuzu KB has been around for many years, and for a long time was the bakkie of choice for Natal Midlands farmers.
It has an impressive 21 models to choose from currently, starting at R219,400 for an Isuzu KB 250 (LEED) Standard 4×2, with its top of the range double cab Isuzu KB 300 D-TEQ LX 4×4 Auto starting at R529,700.
The standard Isuzu has 58 kw at 3,800 rpm, versus its top of the range edition which can push out 130 kw at 3,600 rpm.
6. Nissan NP300 Hardbody – 768
The bigger brother of the NP200, the Hardbody has a starting price of R169,400 – excellent value for a 2 litre pushing out 84 kw.
The 2.4 petrol 4WD pushes out 105 kw at 5,600 rpm and has a 11.1l/100 km fuel ratio.
7. Volkswagen Amarok – 374
The 2.0 TDI basic 103kW starts at R281,600, with the Double Cab 2.0 BiTDI Highline starting at R534,600, which gives you 132kW at 4,000 rpm.
8. Toyota Land Cruiser PU – 360
Toyota’s Land Cruiser pickup is a big ‘safari vehicle’ for farm owners throughout Souther Africa.
Starting from R548,900 for a 4.0 litre Double Cab Petrol pushing out 170 kw, the Cruiser hits its straps with a V8 Double Cab Diesel model, starting from R646,500 for a maximum torque of 430 Nm
9. Mazda BT-50 -153
The Mazda has a starting price from R292,200, with the 3.2 litre model giving you a serious 147kW and 470Nm of torque.
10. Nissan Navara – 105
The third and biggest Nissan on the list, the Navara starts from R319,900 for a 2.5dCi 4×2 XE model, with the V6 3.0dCi 4×4 A/T V9X priced at R579,900 for 170 KW of power, and 550 Nm of torque.
