President Zuma for sale on Gumtree
A Gumtree user “Average Joe” published an advertisement selling South Africa’s president Jacob Zuma.
The advertisement, published on 19 June 2014, is titled “President for Sale”. The page describes the offer as: “Desperately in need of a functioning president. This one costs too much to maintain.”
The ad states that the seller “will take what we can get at the moment… just make an offer. Or to swap for smarter/cheaper model”.
“No chancers – only barcode ID holders or TAX payers please,” the advertisement continues.
MyBroadband also contacted the Presidency for comment, but no feedback was received by the time of publication.
You can’t sell Zuma: Gumtree
The Gumtree advertisement “President for Sale” was removed shortly after this article went live.
Gumtree spokesperson Estelle Nagel explained that you can buy and sell pretty much anything on Gumtree, but you can’t sell people – “even if they are in the public domain”.
“We encourage users to only upload advertisements that offer legitimate goods and services (or requests for the aforementioned),” she said.
