Top South African universities in BRICS ranking

The University of Cape Town has once again been ranked as the top South African university in the QS University BRICS rankings.
The institute was ranked 9th overall across all BRICS universities, with a score of 84.9, tied with UniCamp in Brazil.
Wits, which was ranked SA’s top university in the recent Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), found itself second to UCT, ranked 31st overall, with a score of 72.1.
Stellenbosch University was rated the third best university in the country (34th overall), followed by the University of Pretoria at 46th.

It should be noted that different university rankings weight their scoring criteria differently.
According to the QS University ranking methodology, the following weights were applied to determine its ranks:
- Academic reputation (30%)
- Employer reputation (20%)
- Faculty/student ratio (20%)
- Staff with a PhD (10%)
- Papers per faculty (10%)
- Citations per paper (5%)
- International faculty (2.5%)
- International students (2.5%)
The QS 2013 global rankings placed UCT in 145th overall, followed again by Wits (313th), and Stellenbosch (387th).
Outside of the top 400 universities, QS does not list specific ranks for the institutions, opting for a range.
The QS 2014 rankings have not yet been released.
