The Sunday Times has listed the top 100 companies on the JSE, based on their performance on the local exchange.

According to the Sunday Times, its Top 100 Companies list recognises the best-performing JSE-listed companies, based on shareholder returns and performance over a five-year period.

For a second successive year, Coronation Fund Managers was ranked as the top company on the JSE, having given investors an average annual compound return of over 78%.

ICT firm, EOH Holdings, was ranked second – also for the second year in a row – with an average compound return of 63.%.

Another tech company, Pinnacle Holdings, was the biggest faller from 2013’s top 10 list, dropping to 28th, from last year’s 7th position.

Pinnacle has had a difficult year on the JSE, thanks mainly to controversy surrounding one of its directors, Takalani Tshivhase, who was arrested in March for allegedly bribing a SAPS official.

Following Tshivhase’s arrest, over half of Pinnacle’s value was swiped off on the stock exchange – a loss the company has struggled to recoup even after the case against him was dismissed and the charges dropped.

At the time of Tshivase’s arrest, the company’s shares were trading around R20.00 – today, they are trading closer to R11.90.
