Blackberry has refuted claims in a Reuters report which said that Samsung was looking at a potential $7.5 billion buyout of the smartphone maker.
In a statement issued, BlackBerry said it has not engaged with Samsung in any deal, but refused to comment further:
BlackBerry is aware of certain press reports published today with respect to a possible offer by Samsung to purchase BlackBerry.
BlackBerry has not engaged in discussions with Samsung with respect to any possible offer to purchase BlackBerry.
BlackBerry’s policy is not to comment on rumors or speculation, and accordingly it does not intend to comment further.
On Wednesday, Reuters reported that Samsung wants to buy BlackBerry to gain access to its patent portfolio, citing a source “familiar with the matter” and documents that it has seen.
The source reportedly said that Samsung initially proposed an offer that represented a premium of 38% to 60% over BlackBerry’s current trading price, implying an enterprise value of $6 billion to $7.5 billion (US) for BlackBerry.
