New shopping mall coming to South Africa’s ‘richest’ area – in the middle of the desert

The Segonyana Mall is set to open in Kuruman, Northern Cape in November 2025.
The new mall is being developed by the Moolmam Group and is set to bring a safe and secure shopping experience to the heart of the bustling Kuruman.
The mall officially broke ground on Monday, 2 December marking the commencement of construction. This milestone follows years of planning and multiple delays, signalling the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the community.
“The new shopping centre will cater to the expanding needs of residents with an exciting mix of diverse retailers. In addition to anchor tenants Shoprite and Boxer, shoppers can look forward to big-name brands like Sheet Street, Home Choice, Total Sports, and Sportscene,” said the Moolman Group.
“Essential services such as Capitec Bank and Arrie Nel Pharmacy will ensure convenience for all, while popular fashion brands like Mr Price, Pep, Markhams, and Choice Clothing bring style closer to home. Roots Butchery and Boxer Liquor are included in the line-up of 34 stores.”
The 3.1-hectare site is also conveniently located at the corner of Tsening Road and Bree Street, which is directly opposite the taxi rank.
The mall spans approximately 11,000 square metres of gross lettable area and features a single-level parking facility for easy access.
High-level security will ensure a safe shopping experience for all visitors.
The Mall will also boost is also set to boost local economic growth, generating much-needed jobs during and after construction.
“This development is not just about bricks and mortar. It’s about creating a space that serves the people of Kuruman,” said Pieter Beyers from the Moolman Group.
“The mall is an investment in the community’s future, providing modern infrastructure that complements the town’s growth and strengthens its position as an economic and social hub in the Northern Cape.”
Segonyana Mall is set to become an attraction for both national brands and local businesses due to its design’s focus on security and accessibility.
Notably, Kuruman is in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality. This is also the case for the Gamagara local municipality, which spends R23,000 on each resident – by far the highest in the country.
Stats SA said that a reason Gamagara’s the richest is due to it is the home of Kathu, whose economy is mainly driven by Sishen, Kumba Iron Ore’s flagship mine.
Kathu, which attracts skilled workers and high-income earners, is only 30 minutes away from Kuruman.
On top of Iron Ore, Kuruman is situated in an area, which is rich in manganese – a crucial metal for steel and electric vehicles.
