How much your chocolate bar really weighs
It’s a question many of us have asked ourselves when picking up a bar of chocolate off the store shelf: Am I getting the weight that is promised on the packaging?
We decided to answer that question by purchasing a food scale, a few hundred rand’s worth of bars, slabs, and boxes of chocolate, and putting promises from brands like Cadbury’s, Beacon, and Nestlé to the test.
To conduct the test, each chocolate’s stated package weight was recorded, after which it was taken out of its wrapper and weighed.
The actual weight was noted, and a percentage difference between stated and actual weight calculated.
All the chocolates were opened over a plastic container placed on our food scale to ensure no bits of the bar or slab were lost.
The container was cleaned after each measurement to avoid the weights being affected by any leftover chocolate from the previous measurement.
