  • Motsoaledi to redo work visa rules: Following a meeting with the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) last week, Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said that he will withdraw the new work visa regulations that he recently gazetted, saying that he was “ill-advised” to gazette them the day before the March 29 deadline for public comments on the draft version.   • Eskom predicts spending ‘significantly less’ on diesel: Eskom intends to cut its diesel budget for the 2024/25 fiscal year as it expects to depend less on its diesel-powered emergency generators. The company allocated around R30 billion for diesel to operate the open-cycle gas turbines (OCGTs) for the year ending March 2024, a substantial increase from R6.1 billion the previous year, but ultimately spent R21 billion.   • Mpumalanga municipality slapped with R200 million pollution fine: The Govan Mbeki Municipality was found guilty of six counts relating to contravention of the National Environmental Act, pollution of water resources, contravention of the National Water Act, failure to comply with a compliance notice and unauthorised disposal of water between November 2019 and September 2020.   • Hundreds of Nasi iSpani employees left unpaid: Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s Nasi iSpani programme, which translates to ‘here is a job’ in isiZulu, promises mass youth employment in the province. However, more than 300 young people employed by the programme at the province’s Department of Social Development have not been paid since they began working in February. [News24]

  • Markets: South Africa’s rand strengthened on Tuesday, ahead of U.S. inflation data. On Wednesday (10 April), the rand was trading at R18.46 to the dollar, R23.42 to the pound, and R20.12 to the euro. Oil is trading at $89.46 a barrel. [Reuters]
