This is how much the ‘million dollar’ winner gets – thanks to the exchange rate
The 2016 Nedbank Golf Challenge, more widely known as the ‘Million Dollar’ challenge, has teed up at the Gary Player Country Club on Thursday, with $6.5 million (R93 million) total prize money on offer.
The field has been bumped up to 30 players in 2015, and will increase to 72 players in 2016, having won a premier place on the European Tour’s elite Final Series of the Race to Dubai.
The winners of this year’s event will receive the following prize money
- First Prize: $1,250,000 – R17.9 million
- Second Prize: $775,000 – R11.1 million
- Third Prize: $433,000 – R6.21 million
- Fourth Prize: $348,000 – R4.99 million
- Fifth Prize: $295,000 – R4.23 million
Additional prizes on offer for the golfers over the next four days include:
- The first player to score an albatross on the spectacular Nedbank par-five ninth hole will win a Volvo V40 Cross Country (Starting price R386,700).
- And on the Volvo par-three 16th, the first player to score a hole-in-one here will win a Volvo V60 Cross Country (Starting price R421,600).
- The Vodacom par-four 17th is offering a Volvo XC90 for the first player to score an eagle here (Starting price R804,400).
- And the first player to make an eagle on the Nedbank par-four 18th will win a Volvo XC60 (Starting price R566.800).
- The Sunbet par-three fourth hole is also offering a hole-in-one prize, with the first player to score an ace here winning a Tag Heuer limited edition Ayrton Senna F1 watch (app R25,000).
156 players teed off at the 2015 edition of the Open Championship at St Andrews, with total prize money of £6.3million, whilst the winner received £1.15 million (R24.6 million)
On the US PGA, the end of the year tournament, the FedEx Cup prize has a prize pot of $35 million:
- 1st: $10,000,000 – R143 million
- 2nd: $3,000,000 – R43 million
- 3rd: $2,000,000 – R28.7 million
- 4th: $1,500,000 – R21.5 million
- 5th: $1,000,000 – R14.3 million
- 126th-150th: $32,000 – R459,000
European Tour players competed for record prize money of €166 million in The 2015 Race to Dubai, consisting of 48 tournaments played in 27 different countries.
Winner of this years European Tour’s order of merit, Rory McIlroy picked up £980,000 (R21 million) in prize money for the World Tour Championships in Dubai, plus an additional £1.2 million (R25.7 million) bonus for winning the the Race to Dubai.
