How many Mustangs Ford is selling in South Africa

 ·6 Jul 2016

Despite its price tag, and what is a really difficult economic climate, the Ford Mustang has managed to sell well since its launch in South Africa at the end of 2015.

Ford noted at its launch in December that approximately 35-40 cars were arriving into the country monthly, with the first batch of cars only available from mid-January 2016 – and amid a massive pre-order backlog.

Ford said it’s waiting list could extend into 2018.

According to sales figures released by Naamsa over the past three months – April to June – shows that the Mustang has climbed into the top 100 best selling cars list – despite their price tag – no thanks to a weakened rand against the dollar.

The motoring fraternity say there is no real competitor in South Africa for the Mustang – given its muscle car status. The closest thing to a competitor may be the BMW 4 Series – although a motoring expert noted that ‘people don’t cross-shop a Mustang with a BMW’.

Naamsa’s data shows the following sales figures for the Mustang and BMW 4 Series over the past three months in SA:

April

The Ford Mustang was the 59th best-selling vehicle in the country offloading 114 units, while the BMW 4 Series managed 101 units – ranking 64th.

May

The Mustang sold 95 units ranking 63rd best in the country, while BMW’s 4 Series sold 125 units, ranking just outside the top 50 – 54th.

June

The Mustang sold 77 units (74th best), while the BMW cracked the top 50 – 45th selling 171 units.

The 4 Series ranges between a 4201 Coupe pushing 135kW for a starting price of R571,400, and a 440i Gran Coupe, delivering 240kW, and starting at a price of R823,500.

BMW4

The Audi S5 Coupe is also in a similar class to the Mustang, according to a motoring expert. The A5 2.0T FSI quattro starts at R635,000, while the 3.0 FSI quattro costs R749,500 for the S5 3.0T FSI quattro, it starts at R877,000.

The Mustang GT’s 5.0L V8 Engine can deliver 303kW of horsepower, while the 2.3l EcoBoost model still manages 233kWs.
