Bringing true broadband to rural South Africa

Vox Telecom has launched its Yahclick satellite broadband service aimed at providing fast, reliable and affordable broadband to urban and remote areas.

Vox Telecom CEO, Douglas Reed told delegates at the launch on Wednesday (23 May 2012) that affordable broadband satellite services can significantly boost businesses in rural areas, and that this will become a reality with new Ka-band satellites.

“There is little ADSL or 3G access in rural areas,” said Reed. “Farms and lodges for example have absolutely no communications or are battling along using dialup or EDGE services which are next to useless, and their businesses are suffering as a result.”

Vox Telecom has partnered with Yahsat to bring affordable Ka-band satellite broadband to South Africa, and is currently the exclusive provider of Yahclick products in the country.

Reed said that the demand for the high speed satellite products has been very good, despite the fact that the Yahclick products will only become available in August.

YahClick project manager Jacques Visser said that Vox Telecom has secured room for about 70,000 connections in South Africa, but said that the growing demand may mean that this capacity will be exceeded in future.

Despite the affordable rates, compared to other satellite products, Vox Telecom is confident that it has developed business models which will be profitable and sustainable.
