The Communications Regulators’ Association of Southern Africa (CRASA) is considering a proposal to create a set of universal mobile data tariffs for the SADC region by 2019.

Richard Makgotlho from ICASA, who chairs the CRASA subcommittee on electronic communications, confirmed the plans.

The Southern African Development Community (SADC), spans 15 member states – including South Africa, Mauritius, Tanzania, Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

The aim of the regulations is to ensure mobile data charges are uniform and affordable in all SADC countries.

Speaking to Zimbabwean publication The Source, Makgotlho said they want to encourage mobile operators to reduce data and voice prices.

If they can’t do it on their own, however, CRASA will create regulations that force them to do so.

Makgotlho told MyBroadband the proposal for the regulations will be discussed at CRASA’s next AGM, which will be held in South Africa in March.
