What managers and managing directors earn in South Africa

New data released by South African jobs portal, Adzuna, shows that the average salary for a managing director in the country is nearing R1 million – coming closer to large paycheques seen other by top executives.

Analysing over 130,000 unique online job listings in South Africa, Adzuna found an increasing trend towards a demand for technical skills in the country, while it noted an “interesting increase” in the variety of jobs that were heading to the R1 million mark.

Financial, digital and engineering positions claim most of the R1 million-plus spots, with directors of all types filling in the gaps. Managing Directors, specifically, are currently being offered R986,000 on average.

A report released by PwC in the past month highlighted the average salaries earned by the top executives at listed companies.

Executives at small and medium-sized companies are more in-line with Adzuna’s data, with PwC putting the figures for CEOs at between R1.3 million and R2.5 million, and for Executive Directors at between R1 million and R2.1 million.

At big companies, these averages increase to between R3.3 million and R7.9 million for CEOs and between R2.1 million and R4.4 million for Executive Directors.

Manager salaries across different sectors

Earlier this year, CareerJunction released its annual salary survey, revealing what people earn across 10 sectors in South Africa. Included in this salary data are the ranges for various management positions.

Reflecting Adzuna’s data, the highest average salaries are seen in the engineering, ICT and financial space – though managers take the top salaries across most sectors.

Here, the average senior financial manager can expect to earn approximately R783,850 – excluding bonuses and benefits. Even in lower-paying sectors, such as sales, managers take the top spot.
