Starbucks is launching in Durban in November
US coffee chain Starbucks will make its long-awaited debut in Durban in November 2017, brand owner Taste Holdings said on Wednesday.
The group said that it will open two new stores in eThekwini, the first of which will launch on Durban’s iconic Florida Road, with another being set up in the Gateway shopping centre.
The Florida Road Starbucks will open on 25 November, and the Gateway store soon after, Taste said.
The Florida Road store will feature a full Starbucks Reserve bar. According to the group, reserve bars serve rare, small-lot coffees sourced from around the world.
The store in Gateway will be a 400-sqm branch that seats 160 people.
Starbucks launched in South Africa in April 2016, with its first branch in Rosebank, Johannesburg. Taste has since launched five additional branches across Gauteng.
The brand is yet to debut in Cape Town, but Taste previously said that it had plans to launch in the mother city some time in 2017, though the group is yet to expand on its plans.
Taste has said that its rollout plans for the Starbucks brand in South Africa will be slow and considered – delivering a “quality” Starbucks experience.
The holding group said at the end of last month that it expects to report a headline loss per share of between 15.5 cents and 16.4 cents for the period ended August 2017, representing a decline of between 72.2% and 82.2%, compared to the headline loss per share of 9.0 cents in 2016.
Taste however, highlighted expenses associated with the final conversions to Domino’s, and the launch of Starbucks, which it said “have now been established”, meaning no further launch costs.
It said that some of these costs are continuing in the business as part of ongoing infrastructure required to support future growth of the business.
