Here’s what is happening in and affecting South Africa today:
- Presidential contender, Zweli Mkhize says that the ANC is at risk of disappearing as it continues to tear itself apart from the inside through factional battles. He said that the ANC needs to unite, and take action against those who are manipulating the party’s branches in the lead up to the elective conference in December.
- ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe has warned the party’s branches that if they miss the deadline for nomination for the next party president – this Sunday – they will forfeit their spot to vote at the December conference. The ANC is expected 5,240 delegates at the conference, deciding on the future of the party.
- In a shocking twist, Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe has defied calls to stand down, and instead announced that he would be staying in power and presiding over his party’s coming conference. In a late night address on Sunday, where many expected the statesman to resign, Mugabe rather focused on unity within the party.
- The timeshare industry may be facing a class-action lawsuit from clients who claim that the system around their contracts is rigged. A consumer protection lawyer says that she has found at least 48 timeshare contracts to be illegal, while complaints pile up that clients can’t book time at accommodations.
- South Africa’s rand raced to a two-week high against the dollar on Friday as the greenback came under pressure after a report that investigators probing possible Russian interference in the U.S. election had subpoenaed President Donald Trump’s election campaign for documents. On Monday the rand was at R14.03 to the dollar, R18.53 to the pound and R16.46 to the euro.
