Vodacom aims for “Amazon-like” online experience

Vodacom says it wants a bigger focus online from both a service and sales perspective, to “create an Amazon-like experience”.

Speaking at a roundtable event in Sandton on Friday (28 September), Vodacom CEO Shameel Joosub said:  “Where we would like to go is a bigger focus online going forward…approaching it from a service perspective – so services online; and from a sales perspective – so selling online.”

“Our strategy, our play is to create an Amazon-like experience, and really to invest in that. It is not something we are going to achieve overnight, but certainly the direction, that is where we would like to go,” the group lead said.

“More and more we will move towards online and the country will evolve and we will get much more transactions happening online. It will grow exponentially in the years to come. I think that is where the opportunity lies,” Joosub continued.

“If we can create the right experience…if we can make it simpler, easier, better, and if we can invest now, then I think there is an opportunity to be very dominant in that space.”

He stressed that the company would continue to focus on its retail distribution offerings.

“We have an extensive distribution network. We have over 26,000 distribution points…we have over 350 of our own stores,” the CEO said.
