Telkom insists Sacu will sign
Telkom says it will push on and implement a wage agreement it reached with the Communication Workers Union (CWU) last week.
This follows a meeting with South African Communications Union (Sacu) on Wednesday (31 July 2013) after which, Telkom said, Sacu President Michael Hare indicated that Sacu “will sign the agreement next week”.
“Based on the outcome of SACU’S ballot process, 45% participated – of which, we did not get an outright majority not to accept the company’s offer as we traditionally work on mandates, [thus] we are obliged to conclude an agreement with Telkom,” Hare said.
Telkom has initiated the implementation process which will entail a special payroll run and the payment of part of the back pay by Wednesday, 7 August 2013 – with the rest being paid out on Friday, 23 August 2013.
Telkom said that it would implement the agreement in respect of all employees falling within the defined bargaining unit – including members of union Solidarity.
Solidarity spokesperson, Marius Croupcamp previously told BusinessTech that it “will not sign that agreement,” but conceded that Telkom would likely implement its wage terms unilaterally anyway.
