Telkom offers free tributes to Madiba
Telkom has given South Africans, and guests from abroad, the opportunity to pay their respects to the late Nelson Mandela through a toll-free tribute line.
Today marks the official memorial day for Nelson Mandela, who passed away on 5 December 2013.
Over 85,000 people are expected to make their way to the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg for the official memorial service – which will see over 100 former and current heads of state gather to honour his legacy.
Since his passing, social media channels, media outlets, broadcasters and radio airwaves across the globe have been flooded with messages of sorrow, condolences and tributes to the former South African leader, who emerged from a 27-year jail term in 1990 to lead South Africa from apartheid to democracy.
Telkom has offered those wishing to pay respect to the South African icon a chance to call one of 17 toll-free numbers to leave a tribute.
According to a Telkom spokesperson – and confirmed on the Sabc’s Twitter page – selected messages will be broadcast on the various Sabc radio stations.
The 17 toll-free numbers represent 17 different languages, including South Africa’s 11 official languages, as well as 6 numbers for international callers.
The calls are free from Telkom landlines and Telkom Mobile numbers, while standard rates apply for other calls and networks.
