Vodacom clocks up 8 million users for 1GB promo
More than 8 million people made use of Vodacom’s 1GB of free data on 11 May 2014, which the company gave to all its subscribers as part of its twentieth birthday celebration.
Vodacom said that they set a new network record with throughput peaking at 29 Gigabits per second, 20% higher than anything they had seen before.
The operator said that data traffic was as much as 150% higher than normal in high-demand areas.
On Sunday many people complained about poor speeds and connectivity issues, and Vodacom said that they learned from this experience.
“In terms of network capacity this highlights the need to balance price reductions with increased capacity,” said Vodacom.
“We’ve already announced that we intend to spend around R9 billion on our network in South Africa during the current financial year, an increase of roughly 30% on last year.”
“It’s exactly this investment that allows us to increase capacity and at the same time continue to bring data prices down,” Vodacom said.
