Audit firm Deloitte and Touche has been commissioned to conduct an independent forensic investigation into claims that Sanral held roadblocks to coerce motorists to register for e-tolling.

“In the interests of providing the investigator… with as much information as is possible… [we] call on anyone who was stopped at the roadblock on the Linksfield Road onramp… or at any other place… to [come forward] and report it to the investigator,” Justice Project SA said a statement on Sunday.

The SA National Roads Agency (Sanral) has denied holding the roadblocks in January and has labelled reports about them as a “malicious rumour”.

The rumours had social networks Twitter and Facebook aflutter.

Sanral said at the time: “No staff from either Sanral or its toll operator ETC have conducted any roadblocks as described in the e-mails and social network postings.”

The company said the rumours started after its staff were seen marking roads and that motorists had thought they were being stopped in a Sanral roadblock.
