Cell C to shift data focus to business market
Cell C has said that the consumer mobile broadband segment in South Africa is saturated, and that it will now focus on the government, SME and corporate sectors.
Cell C said that the “mobile data player” market is saturated, and that the company’s focus in 2012 will be on the business and government markets.
Michael Ansley, the executive head of business partners at Cell C, said in an interview with Pyramid’s Badii Kechiche, that their recent focus was on data – and that they made a “really big jump in garnering a few hundred thousand customers on the back of their 3G network rollout”.
“The first push, which really changed the game in mobile data in South Africa, is the prepaid data stick which we launched in 2010. The price per [megabyte] was significantly lower than any of our competitors
“Clearly, as we go on into 2012, the game changes. Our competitors have caught up from a pricing perspective, and the data market is saturated on mobile data player space.”
Ansley said that Cell C will make a significant shift to compete for the business market, and possibly the government market as well.
“The game will be played in the SME space, from Cell C’s perspective,” said Ansley, “The build-out of the IT infrastructure, and the network, supports our move into the SME space – with a variety of different services to be bundled out in 2012.”
Cell C was asked about their current mobile broadband subscriber numbers, and the shift from the consumer market to the business market – but the company did not provide feedback by the time of publication.
