Load shedding changes for the weekend – here’s the new schedule

 ·23 Jun 2023

Power utility Eskom has announced changes to the load shedding schedule for the weekend ahead.

Load shedding will continue at stage 3 until midnight on Friday (23 June), then be suspended until 05h00 on Saturday.

Stage 1 load shedding will be implemented between 05h00 and 16h00, then pushed to stage 3 until midnight.

This pattern will repeat on Sunday.

Monday will return to suspended load shedding between midnight and 16h00 and stage 3 in the evenings.

The full schedule is below:

Friday, 23 June

  • Stage 3: until 00h00

Saturday, 24 June

  • Suspended: 00h00 to 05h00
  • Stage 1: 05h00 to 16h00
  • Stage 3: 16h00 to 00h00

Sunday, 25 June

Breakdowns have reduced to 14,675MW of generating capacity while the generating capacity out of service for planned maintenance has slightly increased to 3,908MW.

Over the past 24 hours, a generating unit each at Arnot, Kendal and Kriel power stations were returned to service.

Further delays in returning to service a generating unit at Grootvlei and two generating units at Hendrina power station are contributing to the current capacity constraints.

Eskom has managed to keep high stages of load shedding at bay for three weeks, largely thanks to reduced planned outages, improved generation and lower-than-expected demand.

Despite the improvement, load shedding continues to be implemented daily, with the country now entering into its 205th day of outages since the current ‘cycle’ started in September 2022.

South Africans have only been spared three full days of load shedding in the last 10 months.
