SA site tracks bicycle thefts

 ·23 Dec 2014

South Africa’s premier online cycling website The Hub has launched a “Stolen Bike Database” – an initiative to better track thefts, identify stolen bikes and contact the owners of recovered bikes.

With the increasing value of bicycles, many criminals are targeting cyclists to steal their equipment.

“It’s an unfortunate reality that just about every day we see yet another stolen bike reported in our forums,” The Hub said.

The Hub said that the new Stolen Bike Database provides a more organised way than its forums to keep track of reported stolen bikes.

Bikes are listed with some key information in a set structure, including make, model and year, to allow for more useful searching.

Other information listed in the database include colour, serial number, photos and further special features to assist in identification.

“The aim is to allow for quicker identification of a stolen bike and an easy means to contact the owner,” The Hub explained.

“Additionally, over time the data will give a picture of trends across geographies and brands to further assist in combating bike thefts.”
