Number 1

Universum has released its Most Attractive Employer Awards for 2015, which shows that the government and parastatals are popular employer choices for young South Africans and professionals.

From July to October 2014 Universum conducted a survey of 44,640 students at 25 tertiary institutions and 21,374 professionals from across South Africa.

This research was used to determine the Most Attractive Employer Awards, which provide indicators of the growth of certain sectors.

It further shows young people’s expectations for the future, and the changing face of South Africa’s professional landscape.

Awards are given to the companies ranked the highest in the two different surveys (student and professionals).

Students and professionals vote for employers in terms of the following areas of study:

  • Business/commerce students
  • Engineering/technology students
  • Health care / health sciences / sciences students

Instability an issue for job seekers

Following the trends of 2013, young people are still concerned about their prospects of finding employment and are looking for employers who they perceive as stable.

63% of students are concerned about their prospects of finding a job after graduation, which is slightly down from 66% last year.

Government and parastatals popular

In this year’s rankings, within the student rankings, the government and parastatals feature in the “Top 3” across every sector.

The reason is simple – the government and parastatals are perceived as offering secure and stable employment.

Transnet has becomes more attractive across the board – one of the only SOEs that has large expansion plans in the immediate future.
