A woman in New York  has been granted permission to file for divorce from her husband via social media site, Facebook.

In a landmark ruling, reported by the New York Daily News, the Manhattan Supreme Court ruled that a nurse, Ellanora Baidoo, can to serve her husband a divorce summons via a Facebook message.

The message will be repeated once a week for three consecutive weeks or until “acknowledged” by Baidoo’s husband.

According to the report, husband, Victor Sena Blood-Dzraku, has no permanent address and has kept in touch with his wife by phone and Facebook only.

“We tried everything, including hiring a private detective — and nothing,” said attorney, Andrew Spinnell.

Closer to home, in January, the South Gauteng High Court set a new legal precedent after it granted a South African Facebook user an interdict preventing a friend from posting about his personal life on the social network after she defamed him on the site.
