Another South African hotel has just been ranked as one of the best in the world
The Cape Cadogan Boutique Hotel in Cape Town has been ranked as Africa’s Best City Hotel in Travel and Leisure’s World’s Best Awards for 2026.
The building was originally built in the early 1800s and declared a National Monument in 1984, while remaining open to the public as a hotel.
The hotel is located in the Gardens neighbourhood of Cape Town, South Africa, near Kloof Street.
In 1912, the property was acquired by a renowned actress and socialite, who hosted members of the British Royal Family during their visits to South Africa.
The hotel offers modern “Stable Suites” situated in the original 19th-century horse stables.
Upper Union Street, where the hotel is located, once served as a private access road for Cape Town’s elite before it became a public thoroughfare.
The Cape Cadogan Boutique Hotel has received several awards:

Nestled on a small plot, the hotel is approached via a brick walkway. It features a two-storey Georgian-style building, characterised by a whitewashed facade, neo-classical elements, shuttered windows, upstairs balconies, and a grey-tiled roof.
The hotel consists of a main house with 12 suites, the attached Owners Villa, and its More Quarters apartments and house, accommodating over 60 guests. Amenities include a lounge, breakfast room, library, swimming pool, and garden.
Cape Cadogan offers breakfast only; it does not serve lunch or dinner. Guests can order meals through room service.
The hotel, which is also a national monument
Cape Cadogan offers five options for luxury rooms, including the classic room, luxury room, superior luxury room, stable suite and the two-bedroom stable suite.
The prices for a night’s stay at the Cape Cadogan Boutique Hotel start at $669 per room for the classic room, which includes a king bed, air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and a minibar.
A night in the luxury room costs $827 and includes Wi-Fi, a minibar, access to a sun terrace, and a king bed.
A night’s stay in the superior luxury room costs $997 and includes Wi-Fi, a minibar, a lounge, and access to a private terrace.
The stable suite costs $1,289 per room, per night and includes a minibar, a lounge, a king bed, and access to children’s activities.
A two-bedroom stable suite costs $1,934 per room per night for four guests and includes king or twin beds, a lounge, a minibar, and Wi-Fi.
At the evening social, complimentary canapés, port, and sherry are served, while the library provides hot and cold beverages throughout the day.
The lounge is designed to complement the building’s architectural legacy, featuring gilded mirrors, a chandelier, framed art, comfortable seating, a restored fireplace, wooden flooring, and large curtains.
The suites are categorised into two classes: standard and luxury. The standard suite has woven carpeting, a double bed with a stretched headboard, a writing desk, wing-back armchairs, an en suite bathroom, and a balcony.
The bathroom includes a roll-top bath, a flush toilet, a shower, and a sink. The luxury suites are similarly styled but larger. The attached Owners Villa can accommodate two couples or a family.
The More Quarters portfolio at Cape Cadogan includes 14 one-bedroom apartments, two two-bedroom apartments, and the four-bedroom Redcliffe House, available for three months each year.
These apartments feature a fitted kitchen, dining area, separate bathroom, lounge, and veranda.
The hotel can arrange trips and offer a variety of tours of the city and its surroundings, including wine routes and local safaris.
