Top private school in South Africa giving matrics direct access to European universities for under R10,000 a month
The Deutsche Internationale Schule Kapstadt (DSK) offers South African matric learners a route into universities across Europe, with tuition for Grades 10 to 12 costing less than R10,000 a month.
The DSK, or German International School Cape Town, is a bilingual international school in Tamboerskloof that provides learners with both South African and German educational pathways.
The school has a long history in Cape Town, dating back to 1875 when the St Martini Lutheran parish purchased land to establish a school for the city’s German-speaking community.
The school received financial support from the German government even before the First World War. Following Germany’s defeat and the loss of its colonies, the German School Association in Cape Town became the school’s sponsor in 1930.
It was renamed Deutsche Schule Kapstadt in 1961 and was later moved to a new campus largely financed by the Federal Republic of Germany.
The first DSK learners completed their South African matriculation examinations in 1964. The school later expanded its academic offerings.
An English stream was introduced in 1987, while the first German Abitur examination was written at DSK in 1989.
Today, DSK operates two academic streams. The German stream is aimed at learners who are proficient in German and leads to the Kombi-Abitur.
This combines the German Allgemeine Hochschulreife, or Abitur, with the South African National Senior Certificate (NSC).
The English stream follows the IEB National Senior Certificate curriculum and is accredited by Umalusi. Learners in this stream also complete the German Language Diploma II (DSD II) in Grade 11.
The German qualifications are significant for learners considering studying overseas.
According to the school, Abitur graduates, as well as IEB graduates who obtain the DSD II qualification, can apply directly to universities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland without first completing a Studienkolleg foundation programme.
This provides an alternative route into European higher education for South African learners who might otherwise have to complete additional preparatory studies before qualifying for university admission.
Top-performing school
Learners who have completed the IEB NSC can apply to local institutions using their South African matric results.
DSK is officially recognised as an “Excellent German School Abroad” (Exzellente Deutsche Auslandsschule) under Germany’s Central Agency for German Schools Abroad and the Federal Foreign Office.
As part of this system, the German government provides financial support for infrastructure, maintenance and educational resources.
German teachers are also seconded to the school, with their base salaries paid by the German government.
The school is subject to periodic quality inspections as part of the German government’s overseas school system, in collaboration with South African education authorities.
The campus has expanded considerably over the decades, with facilities including a sports field, swimming pool, music hall, library, amphitheatre, science facilities and sports hall. A new Science Centre was completed in 2023.
For parents, the cost is another important consideration. DSK’s Grade 10 to 12 tuition is approximately R94,284 per year when paid as a lump sum, while the structured monthly payment option is approximately R97,200 per year.
That works out to approximately R8,100 per month over 12 instalments, or R9,720 per month over 10 instalments, keeping the monthly tuition below R10,000 in either case.
The 2025 matric class achieved a 100% pass rate in the National Senior Certificate examinations and recorded 287 distinctions.
The combination of a South African matric qualification, German language certification, and access to the German Abitur means DSK learners can potentially leave school with qualifications that provide options in both South Africa and Europe.
