Krispy Kreme launches in South Africa: everything you need to know

Krispy Kreme has opened its doors to the South African public – and get ready to queue if you want to get your hands on one of their world-famous doughnuts.
The group opened its first store in the country at The Zone @ Rosebank, with plans to open 31 more stores at locations across the country over the next five years.
The doughnuts are made fresh in store, and according to reports, the Rosebank store can produce up to 110 dozen doughnuts (1,320) an hour, when operating at 100% efficiency.
The launch store offers 16 flavours – the 10 best-sellers in the world, and six flavours unique to South Africa.
This is what the doughnut menu looks like:
- A single original glazed doughnut costs R8.95, with a dozen costing R89.95;
- Assorted doughnuts cost R10.95 for one, or R99.95 for a dozen.
The shop also offers a double dozen (24) doughnuts:
- Original glazed for R169.95;
- Assorted for R189.95;
- Or a combination of the two for R179.95.

The launch of Krispy Kreme marks the entry of yet another international brand in South Africa.
According to Krispy Kreme’s international vice president, Michael McGill, the group is eyeing markets like Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana – but it wants to test the waters first in South Africa.
“Within five or six years we could be in five or six countries in Africa…this is the hottest new market in the world,” he told CNN Money.
Burger King re-entered the local market in 2013, and was met with as much fanfare and long queues when it launched, and Swedish clothing retailer, H&M, recently opened its doors in the country in early November.
Coffee giant Starbucks aims to launch in SA in the first half of 2016, while Krispy Kreme competitor, Dunkin Donuts, has also expressed interest in opening up shop in South Africa.
