A new report provides a snapshot of the wealthiest and poorest provinces in South Africa.
According to The South African Institute of Race Relations (IRR), the three biggest provincial economies – Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape – account for 55.2% of South Africa’s population but contribute 64.1% to South Africa’s gross domestic product (GDP).
Some 50.6% of taxpayers are registered in just two provinces – Gauteng and the Western Cape, the IRR said.
The institute presents the nine provinces comparatively through more than a hundred indicators spanning across demographics, the economy, education, health and social security, general living conditions, politics and government, and crime and security.
BusinessTech ranks the country’s nine provinces based on GDP per head.
