SA worker fined R40,000 for submitting false overtime claims
A municipal worker in Pietermaritzburg was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment or a R40,000 fine after he was found guilty of submitting false overtime claims over two years.
The Witness reported that the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court sentenced Reeaz Paruk for fraud, forgery and uttering.
Paruk was also ordered to pay back the overtime claimed, amounting to R385,102.94 – which will be deducted from the payout of his pension.
The Witness reported that Paruk, a foreman at the municipality’s electricity department, was arrested by the Hawks in May following an internal audit by the Msunduzi Municipality.
He was sentenced this week to a R40,000 fine or five years’ imprisonment and an additional five years wholly suspended for five years.
Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Nqobile Madonda welcomed the sentence.
“Council welcomes the verdict of the accused. This should be a lesson and serve as a deterrent to all other employees that engage in illegal activities. Crime does not pay and you will be caught out,” Madonda said.
