Name change on the cards for iconic stadium in Cape Town

The Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) has partnered with the marketing firm Megapro to re-evaluate the commercial strategy for the Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town, which could see a name change for the iconic stadium.

The stadium’s current naming rights are held by World Sports Betting, which makes it the World Sports Betting (WSB) Newlands Cricket Ground.

However, this sponsorship agreement is nearing its conclusion, creating an opening for a new sponsor.

“Partnering with Megapro is a strategic move to unlock the full commercial potential of our assets,” said WPCA CEO Corrie van Zyl.

“Their expertise and proven track record will help us deliver world-class sponsorship solutions that benefit our stakeholders and elevate the Western Cape as a global sports destination.”

This comes as the WPCA prepares for the 2026/2027 international cricket season, which will feature the New Year’s Test match.

The 2026/2027 international programme will include two major Test matches against Australia and England, as well as a One Day International against Bangladesh.

To prepare a structured, data-driven offering for the market, the global sports consultancy Futures Sport and Entertainment was appointed to conduct an independent valuation of the WPCA’s commercial assets.

“With world-class international cricket returning to Cape Town, the 2026/27 season offers brands a powerful platform to align with one of South Africa’s most iconic sporting properties,” said Megapro CEO Marc Jury.

“Through this valuation process, we are working to unlock the full commercial potential of WPCA’s assets and structure partnerships that deliver long-term value for both WPCA and its commercial partners,” he said.
