Why digital transformation is so important for SA businesses
Digital transformation continues to dominate boardroom discussions according to Jacques Loubser, chief of infrastructure solutions at BCX as they understand and realise the benefits it can bring to their organisations.
“Organisations must understand what they will be able to do is to use technology to gain better access to their customers,” said Loubser speaking at MyBroadband’s Cloud and Hosting Conference.
“Businesses can use technology to understand what their customers want, how they can improve their customer relationships and use technology to improve their business processes.”
He noted that within the next two years there would be a dramatic shift in South Africa’s business landscape as companies finally swing from a 50/50 reliance on physical and digital infrastructure towards a 45/55 split in favour of digital infrastructure.
How far are SA businesses in making the jump?
“Overall if you want to get an worldwide view of the statistics of cloud, 79% of workloads today run on cloud – 41% of these are in public cloud and 38% in private cloud,” said Loubser.
While local businesses are yet to reach this point, early indications are that they are racing to meet their international counterparts. According to data released by Loubser and BCX and the MyBroadband conference, just 6% of South African businesses have no plans to migrate to cloud services.
In comparison, the biggest survey size (33%) are heavily cloud focused and are already looking to optimise their operations and costs surrounding cloud usage.
The next biggest group, dubbed “cloud explorers”, made up 25% of the sample size and are made up of businesses which have multiple projects or applications deployed in the cloud.
Cloud watchers” (14%) and “cloud beginners” (22%) made up the rest of the respondents and accounted for companies which had begun developing cloud strategies and companies which had proof-of-concept or initial cloud builds in place already,” Loubser said.
