Daytime load shedding is back for the rest of the week – here’s the new schedule
Power utility Eskom says that load shedding will return during the day for the rest of the week as delays in returning units to service tighten available capacity.
Stage 2 load shedding will continue until 16h00 on Wednesday and then ramp up to stage 3 in the evening until midnight.
The group will suspend load shedding overnight, but stage 1 will return at 05h00 and continue until 16h00 when stage 3 will kick in again.
This pattern will repeat until the weekend.
Wednesday, 28 June
- Stage 2: until 16h00
- Stage 3: 16h00 to 00h00
Thursday, 29 June
- Suspended: 00h00 to 05h00
- Stage 1: 05h00 until 16h00
- Stage 3: 16h00 to 00h00
Friday, 30 June
- Suspended: 00h00 to 05h00
- Stage 1: 05h00 until 16h00
- Stage 3: 16h00 to 00h00
Breakdowns currently amount to 16,356MW of generating capacity, while the generating capacity out of service for planned maintenance is 3,023MW.
Over the past 24 hours, a generating unit each at Duvha, Grootvlei and Majuba power stations were returned to service.
In the same period, a generation unit each at Kriel and Majuba power stations were taken out of service due to breakdowns.
The delays in returning to service a generating unit each at Grootvlei, Hendrina and Tutuka power stations are contributing to the current capacity constraints
The new schedule marks the first time in three weeks that load shedding will be implemented during the day in a work week. Eskom has, until now, been able to suspend load shedding until the evening peak between Monday and Friday.
While the group has managed to improve generation performance and cut unplanned outages, the sudden turn serves as a reminder that the grid is still under severe pressure, and the situation can change at very short notice.
Energy experts have warned South Africans not to become complacent, and Eskom has urged households to keep using energy sparingly.
