E-toll review panel expected next week
Reports indicate that a panel to review e-tolling in Gauteng will be announced as soon as next week.
A report on Radio Jacaranda today (3 July) quoted Gauteng premier David Makhura as saying that he will appoint the panel next week.
Makhura, speaking at the State of the Province address for Gauteng last week, said that “people’s [voices] must be heard on all the issues that affect our province”.
“It is against this background that we shall also set up a panel to review the impact of e-tolls and invite new proposals on how we can find a lasting solution to this matter, working with the national government, municipalities and all sectors of society.”
“While we shall not promise easy solutions and claim easy victories, we must make it clear that we cannot close our eyes to the cries of sectors of our population who are severely affected by the cost of traveling across the province,” the premier said.
“How we finance such infrastructure must be deliberated upon and agreed,” he added.
On Wednesday, The South African National Road Agency (Sanral) broke its silence on the proposed review after it only managed to raise R275 million in its latest bond auction, in which it was seeking R500 million.
“Earlier today (2 July), investor confidence was evidently impacted by the pronouncements of the Gauteng premier, David Makhura, ahead of the Sanral July Bond Auction,” Sanral said in a statement.
The entity said it wanted to raise R500 million, but only received total bids of R465 million (wider than current prices) and issued R275 million at mark to market prices.
