ANC wants to introduce tax on rugby, cricket tickets in SA

The ANC wants to introduce a sport ticket levy in South Africa, which will see the Department of Sport and Recreation take a 5% cut for tickets sold at professional sports events in the country.
This is according to a report in the Sunday Times.
News of the potential ticket levy emerged in March, and the proposal has now been included in discussion documents for the ANC’s national general council – scheduled to be held in October.
The levy may lead to a hike in ticket prices, according to the newspaper.
Minister of Sport Fikile Mbalula told the Sunday Times that it “was time the sports industry was taxed like any other”, referring to the ticket levy.
“Sport is a major contributor to the GDP, but nobody is taxed for that,” he said.
Sports bosses have expressed their disapproval of the ticket levy, with Cricket South Africa CEO Haroon Lorgat saying the tax will hit sport fans’ pockets.
“Raising revenue in the form of a ticket levy will trigger some concern for us as we are already challenged with filling the stadiums,” he said.
The full report can be read in the Sunday Times of 23 August 2015.
