This is what a R1,600 doughnut looks like

While Krispy Kreme may have made quite a splash in South Africa, it probably won’t be serving this doughnut on its menu any time soon.
Made with rare ingredients and topped with Cristal Champagne icing and 24-carat gold flakes, the $100 (R1,660) golden doughnut from the Manila Social Club is one of the most expensive doughnuts in the world.
The dough itself is a pâte à choux – the same dough that you’ll find an eclairs. It contains ube, which is a rare purple-coloured sweet potato.
Inside, it has an ube mousse, with chunks of Cristal jelly. It’s then glazed with a Crystal icing and dusted with gold, and then flaked with 24-karat gold shavings.
While the golden doughnut is definitely up there in pricing, it’s not the most expensive doughnut ever made.
In 2014, Krispy Kreme made an extravagant contribution to the confectionery world – also covered in gold, but topped with intricately designed chocolate lotus flower – that came in at a whopping £1,000 (about R24,000).
Aside from the chocolate lotus and gold leaf, the doughnut is also made with Dom Pérignon vintage 2002 champagne jelly, and a raspberry and Chateau d’Yquem crème.
