Wealthy South Africans flocked to these 3 migration hotspots in 2024
Job opportunities and service delivery are still pushing South Africans, including the rich, to other countries, and official data in 2024 show that the UK, Australia, and New Zealand are notable migration hotspots.
According to the latest United Nations International Migrant Stock report, approximately 915,000 South Africans reside abroad across 30 countries, primarily in Africa, Europe, and North America.
However, as this data was last updated in 2021, the current figure is likely higher due to ongoing migration trends.
In 2024, official statistics from several nations shed light on the increasing migration of South Africans seeking better opportunities and improved living conditions.
New Zealand, Australia, and the United Kingdom have emerged as key destinations for wealthy South Africans looking to relocate.
In New Zealand, the influx of South African migrants continues to grow, driven by a combination of employment opportunities and lifestyle factors.
In 2024, Stats NZ reported a noticeable net migration increase, with South Africa contributing significantly.
The statistics body added that 8,700 South Africans had arrived in New Zealand, an increase of 200 from the previous year.
This trend underscores the appeal of New Zealand’s robust economy, safe environment, and quality of life, which resonate with South Africans seeking stability and better prospects for their families.
Australia remains a dominant migration hotspot for South Africans, thanks to its demand for skilled labour and welcoming policies for expatriates.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics estimates that 214,790 South Africans now reside in the country, making them the seventh-largest migrant community.
South African-born residents account for 2.6% of Australia’s overseas-born population and 0.8% of its total population.
Key expat hubs include St Ives in New South Wales, Baldivis in Western Australia, and Point Cook in Victoria, where thriving communities provide a sense of familiarity and support for newcomers.
The Department of Home Affairs’ 2024 data highlights Australia’s attractiveness due to its economic opportunities and family reunification pathways, further cementing its status as a preferred destination.
The United Kingdom also continues to draw a significant number of South African migrants, largely due to historical ties, cultural connections, and language familiarity.
The UK’s migration data for 2024 indicates a steady inflow of skilled workers from South Africa, bolstered by favourable visa policies and established expat communities.
According to the International Migration Census for England and Wales, 217,200 residents were born in South Africa, solidifying the UK as a second home for many.
South Africans are particularly attracted to the UK’s proximity to Europe, high standards of living, and professional networks.
The motivations driving South Africans to leave vary.
A survey conducted by the Inclusive Society Institute (ISI) reveals that economic and personal well-being concerns top the list of reasons for emigration.
Approximately 23.18% of respondents cite better job opportunities as their primary reason for leaving, while 9.79% mention a broader range of opportunities, and 9.69% seek an improved standard of living.
Issues such as poor governance and a perception of a failing state also weigh heavily on the decision to migrate.
Younger South Africans, in particular, display a high willingness to relocate, with 79.5% expressing readiness to move abroad, a figure that rises to 84% among younger respondents.
For wealthy South Africans, safety is another major incentive, with South Africa still facing an increasing trend in violent crimes across the country.
This mobility is further incentivised by favourable tax regimes, higher salaries, and the global recognition of South African qualifications.
For instance, South African healthcare professionals find Canada appealing due to its acceptance of their credentials without additional re-certification.
Similarly, the UK offers straightforward access to European markets, while Australia’s climate and growing South African communities provide comfort and a sense of belonging.
Globally, South Africans stand out for their eagerness to embrace new opportunities abroad.
The migration trends observed in New Zealand, Australia, and the United Kingdom reflect the broader push for economic stability, enhanced living standards, and the pursuit of a brighter future.
For wealthy South Africans, these countries offer a blend of familiarity and promise, making them ideal destinations in an increasingly interconnected world.
