107 hour water outage hitting major Gauteng city
The City of Ekurhuleni will see three large water disruptions over the next few weeks due to planned maintenance in the area, with the longest lasting 107 hours.
The planned maintenance at the various water supply facilities across Ekurhuleni aims to improve plant availability, reliability, and efficiencies.
Water tankers will be arranged for areas without a water supply. Residents are also urged to store water for domestic use and use it sparingly.
Businesses and institutions are also urged to maintain on-site storage equivalent to their daily demand for at least 36 hours.
The maintenance comes amid heightened water supply challenges across Gauteng, where taps regularly run dry.
President Cyril Ramaphosa warned that South Africa’s water supply challenges could lead to a disaster worse than load shedding.
The longest shutdown for Ekurhuleni will last 107 hours, from 29 May at 03h00 to 02 June 2025 at 17h00. The maintenance will see the tie-in of the B16 pipeline from Zuikerbosch, Station 5.
The City of Ekurhuleni added that the Palmiet System will be affected by a 10-hour shutdown for the Klipriviersberg isolation for cleaning and inspection. The shutdown will last from 03 June 2025 at 06h00 to 16h00.
The Palmiet system will also be affected by the Russell Road meter installation during the same time, which would last an extra two hours.
On a positive note, no area will be subject to more than one outage during the maintenance. The affected regions can be found below:
