Durban to get free Wi-Fi

 ·13 Jun 2016

eThekwini Municipality says it will roll out free Wi-Fi in different public access hot spots, targeting rural areas, townships and areas near universities.

This was announced by Mayor James Nxumalo on 31 May, when he delivered the City’s R41.6 billion budget for the 2016/17 financial year.

The project will be rolled out in different phases, beginning with the pilot phase. This phase includes the laying of fibre optic cable.

About R30 million has been set aside for the project in the next financial year. The data limit will begin at 250 megabytes a day per device, in the pilot phase.

Nxumalo said the City has rolled out over 1,500 kilometres of fibre optic cables.

“This has enabled the City to connect all public facilities and to provide free Wi-Fi in all municipal libraries. Before the end of June we expect to launch free Wi-Fi in major townships, rural areas and areas around universities or where there is a high concentration of students,” he said.

Nxumalo said the City plans to set up 750 Wi-Fi access points within the next three years.
