Vodacom in streaming talks with Spotify: report
Spotify is in talks with Vodacom to offer its music streaming services in Africa, according to a Bloomberg report which cited two anonymous sources familiar with the matter.
Vodacom is set to offer its users Spotify subscriptions which include an amount of free data with which they can stream music from the service.
This news follows the recent confirmation from MTN that it plans to offer its users a discount on subscriptions to Simfy Africa, the first international music streaming service to officially launch in South Africa.
MTN said that its users will be able to get a full Simfy Africa subscription for R49 per month which usually costs R60 per month, billed directly to their cellphone account.
Vodacom was asked whether it is in talks with Spotify and what it plans to ask for such a service, but the operator declined to answer specific questions.
A spokesperson for the mobile operator said that they are looking at content deals, but were not able to name specific partners at this stage.
Last month, Vodafone (which owns 65% of Vodacom) announced as part of its strategy to offer content to its users that it would give UK LTE users a six-month subscription to streaming movies and TV shows on Netflix.
