Vodacom keen on street pole cell towers

Vodacom says it is also investigating the possibility of converting street light posts into mini antenna towers.
While the initiative is still in its early stages, the operator said it is targeting about 100 sites in Johannesburg.
This follows the announcement by MTN in August that it had begun deploying antennas on street light poles in Bryanston.
Other areas targeted by MTN include a number of suburbs in Randburg, Fourways, Bryanston, and Saxonwold.
It is understood that both MTN and Vodacom have been trialing the technology for some time, with the main obstacle on rolling out the towers centering around acquiring the necessary permissions from the City.
MTN revealed in January 2014 that it had an infrastructure deal with City Power, in which the group was awarded a 3-year contract following a request for proposals on City Power’s plan to commercialise its infrastructure.
MTN expects to complete the first phase of this project in the next four months. The second phase of the project will be determined by customer requirements, MTN said.
