16 affordable SUVs you can buy right now – and how much it costs to fill them up

 ·4 Jun 2022

Consumers will be hurting following yet another fuel price hike this week, despite the government announcing that it will extend the reduction of the General Fuel Levy in June and July.

The government said it would extend the R1.50 reprieve on the general fuel levy in June, to be followed by a 75 cents reduction in July

The adjusted fuel prices, however, still take the fuel price to record highs, and consumers will have no option but to tighten their belts to accommodate these significant price jumps, said the Automobile Association.

This is how the recent price changes will reflect at the pumps:

Inland May official June Official
95 Petrol R21.84 R24.17
93 Petrol R21.51 R23.94
0.05% diesel (wholesale) R21.99 R23.09
0.005% diesel (wholesale) R22.16 R23.23
Illuminating Paraffin R16.64 R18.20

Below is a table that details how much it roughly costs to fill a tank of various sizes inland this June:

Tank size 93 unleaded 95 unleaded 0.05% diesel
45 litres R1 077 R1 087 R1,039
60 litres R1 436 R1 450 R1 385
80 litres R1 915 R1 933 R1 847

Now more than ever, both price and efficiency are major factors when buying a vehicle in the country. BusinessTech looked at a number of affordable SUVs – the most popular body shape for new vehicles – to see how much they cost to fill up.

The majority of the SUVs listed below have tanks between 40 litre and 48 litre, making them still some of the smallest when compared to a 60 or even an 80-litre tank found on the likes of a Toyota Hilux.
