IT jobs in SA: good news and bad news
The latest CareerJunction Index (CJI) shows that employment has weakened in South Africa over the last few months, with the telecommunications sector being hit particularly hard.
The CJI, which uses data gathered from the CareerJunction website to represent online labour dynamics in South Africa, shows that the demand in most industries is declining.
“Overall, employment has weakened over the last few months. This follows a notable increasing trend during the third quarter of last year,” the CJI report states.
New jobseekers in the telecommunications, motoring, hospitality, sales and financial sectors have been particularly hard hit.
The following graph shows the labour demand in South Africa over the last three years.
Telecoms jobs in decline
There is particularly bad news for jobseekers in the telecoms space. September marks month 4 of decreasing hiring activity in the South African telecommunication industry.
“Year-on-year, employment has weakened by 36%. Career seekers can therefore expect slightly tougher competition on the job market,” the CJI states.
Good news for IT jobseekers
Despite the overall decline of recruitment activity in South Africa, demand for IT professionals remains high.
“The IT industry remains one of the most sought after industries in the online recruitment market,” the CJI states.
